Federal Judges to Address Budgetary Issues at CWRU Law School

The chief judges of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio will headline a program on “The Price of Justice: The Federal Budget and the Federal Courts” on Tuesday, November 13. The program, sponsored by the Northern District of Ohio chapter of the FBA, will take place in Room 157 of Case Western Reserve Law School (11075 East Boulevard).

Chief Judges Solomon Oliver (U.S. District Court) and Patricia Morgenstern-Claren (U.S. Bankruptcy Court) will address the budgetary challenges facing their courts and the federal judiciary more generally as the nation approaches the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of 2012. They will be joined by Professor Joseph White, the chair of CWRU’s Department of Political Science and a noted scholar of the federal budget.

If Congress and the President do not act this year, the federal courts will incur drastic budget reductions through the sequestration process. Even if sequestration is avoided, there is good reason to expect that the judiciary will experience significant reductions that could have major implications for the provision of justice in the federal courts.
