Dealing with Exonerees and Returning Citizens in Our Criminal Justice System: A Dialogue with Our Community

A synopsis of the program follows:

Greater Cleveland now has the dubious distinction of being home to the longest wrongly incarcerated persons in the country. We may well ask: How did this happen? The more difficult question to answer is: What are we as a community going to do about it? After all, it was we “the State” who made the mistake. It seems only fair and just that we “the State” now correct the mistake. This program will examine how our fellow Ohio citizens came to be wrongly incarcerated, how certain lawyers advocated successfully for their release, and how our community responded – or didn't. This program is designed to hear the views of a broad cross-section of the community that touches the issue of exonerees and returning citizens: the judicial branch, the legal community, the reentry community, the faith-based community, and the media. This program is also designed to begin a community dialogue on this issue with the intent that we revisit this discussion annually to assess the progress we have made. It is after all we “the State” who will create the solutions for proper redress for our exonerees and other returning citizens. It is in the end up to us, we “the Community,” to remedy this wrong.
