SOLACE Making a Difference Around Legal Community

SOLACE is making a difference in the lives of our members and those close to them! The program (whose name stands for "Support of Lawyers/Legal Personnel All Concern Encouraged") is a new initiative of the FBA that began at the national level in October 2016. SOLACE provides a way for the FBA legal community to reach out in small, but meaningful and compassionate ways, to FBA members and those related to them in the legal community who experience a death, or some catastrophic event, illness, sickness, injury, or other personal crisis. How can you help? As an FBA member, you automatically will receive SOLACE information via email if a request for assistance is received that could be addressed by FBA members in your area. The SOLACE email notification will describe the need and how you can help. Some examples of how SOLACE has helped the legal community follow.

An FBA member referred a friend who is battling stage IV adrenal cortex carcinoma.  She is a single mother of two boys and due to substantial medical bills, she has been struggling to meet her family’s daily living expenses, including groceries, gas, toiletries, and clothing.  She sought gift cards to local stores and hotel points to cover the hotel costs when she travels to the hospital for treatment.  FBA members graciously responded to the need and provided gift cards to assist this family.

    Greetings:

As you may know, under the leadership of National President Michael Newman, the FBA is sponsoring a Student Civics Essay Contest as part of the FBA’s Civics Initiative.  January 23rd is the deadline (1) for students to apply to the FBA civics essay contest, and (2) to nominate civics studies teachers for the FBA's teacher recognition program.

The topic for the essay contest is: “ What does an impartial Judicial System mean to me?”  There are divisions for Middle School (Grades 6-8) and High School (Grades 9-12).  The Middle School Word Limit is 500 and the High School Word Limit is 1,000.  The winners will be awarded in Washington, DC in conjunction with the FBA Midyear Meeting on March 18, 2017. Funds will be provided for travel along with 1 parent/guardian.

    Dear Members,

2016 was a banner year for our FBA Chapter!

We hosted the FBA National Convention here in Cleveland in September. The Convention started with a very well attended State of the Court Luncheon held at the historic Silver Grill where Judge Oliver was our keynote speaker. The Judge honored retiring Magistrates Kenneth McHargh, Greg White and Nancy Vecchiarelli.  Chief Judge Russ Kendig also brought us up to date as to happenings in the Bankruptcy Court. Thanks to the many firms and Chapter members who sponsored the event and made it possible.  Click here to read more: Who We Are
